Spain, Sangria, and La Sagrada Família

This weekend my roommates and I visited Barcelona. I tagged along last minute and did not research the city, so I didn't have expectations. However, I was completely blown away. The architecture, food, and club scene easily made Barcelona one of my favorite cities.
After some difficulty at the airport because I misspelled my name on my boarding pass (good job Gianna—or should I say Gian?), we finally boarded our 6:30am flight. After landing, we took an Antonio Gaudí, the famous Spanish architect, walking tour. We walked around Old Town Barcelona and saw the homes, streetlamps, and church he designed. The tour ended at La Sagrada Família. This basilica is Gaudí’s most famous and prestigious accomplishment. The basilica has been in construction since 1882. Yeah you read that right, since 1882. According to the guide, the basilica aims to be completed by 2026, but it’s on “Spanish Time”. Despite the cranes and construction, La Sagrada Família was hands down the most interesting and awesome church I have seen.
We also visited Gaudí’s architecture and nature masterpiece, Park Güell. Founded in 1914, the park sits above Barcelona and offers a breathtaking view of Old Town, Downtown, and the beach. The park has houses and structures scattered across the hillside.
Saturday night we ended the trip at Opium, a popular club on the Mediterranean. Barcelonians are known for partying late and the clubs did not disappoint. The clubs often open at 1:30am and do not close until 6am!
Blogging about Barcelona be an injustice without mentioning the food. Located so close the ocean, we had our fill of seafood. Meat and seafood paella, stuffed churros, and sangria were our staples. Many restaurant chains are unavailable in Rome, so when we spotted Taco Bell and Starbucks we caved. It was a treat having a taste of home, even if it was not the most “Spanish” lunch. After an amazing trip, its safe to say I will be coming back to Barcelona.
